Bringing The WNBA To Philly Is A No Brainer

By Richie Rivera

Philadelphia has been booming recently in the world of basketball with the continued success of the Philadelphia 76ers led by Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, the Delaware Blue Coats making it to the G League title game, led by fan favorites Paul Reed and Rayjon Tucker, and the NCAA tournament right around the corner with schools such as Villanova, Drexel, and Temple fighting for their shot in the big dance. But, there could be another major addition to the Philadelphia basketball fan base could push Philly sports to another level!

According to WNBA star and Delco native Natasha Cloud, she acknowledged during the Girls Talk Sports TV Panel that members of the Philadelphia community are pushing to form an expansion team for the WNBA. Cloud also mentioned that these discussions have been in the works for over a year now with the city of Philadelphia. And with this news, Philly sports fans have been in a frenzy and in wonder if this statement by Cloud was actually a reality.

According to the founder of the Girls Talk Sports TV Panel Khristina Williams, she has confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia that Cloud’s mention of a WNBA expansion in Philly is true and is in the works.

Though the league hasn’t confirmed the possible expansion in Philly just yet and it is still a rumor, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert acknowledged in 2019 that “down the road” would be a great opportunity to expand from the now 12 franchise league.

It has been two years since these comments and the demand for basketball has only grown with the continued success of the 76ers, Blue Coats, and local universities to grow the interest of the WNBA and city to make a deal to form a new franchise for the best fans in all of basketball.
